I want to move to San Diego but I got denied from SDSU and San Marcos due to impaction. I’m a non-local, I currently go to a CSU as a junior so I’ve already completed my GE’s and pre reqs for business. I can’t find myself going to this school anymore and I just want to move back home. I am planning on taking a year off but not completely since I plan on taking classes at community colleges in San Diego so I can be considered local. I have a 3.6 gpa so is it a good idea to re-take courses that I got a C in to boost my gpa? i don’t know what classes I would take in community besides just random ones.
Also, for financial aid what is the max grant/loan do students get in community colleges? My EFC is 0 and I plan on being full time in community.
@Gumbymom what is a high unit transfer? I didn’t even know about that until now how many units is considered high?
@irena2000x
First, a couple of things.
-Agree 1000000% with @Gumbymom
-What CSU are you at currently?
-Where is “home”?
-Since your EFC is 0 you’ll likely pay $0 for cc tuition.
Here’s a bit of insight. I’m a local cc transfer student that was accepted this year. I attended multiple cc’s before being admitted to State. That said I have 38 units from a local cc. I also have an ADT degree which gives me priority admission.
I know you’d like to attend State and I think that you should for sure try to transfer but I suggest you stay where you’re and just finish it out. It’s possible that you’ll be accepted but highly unlikely even if you take classes at a local cc here in SD.
Good luck.
Usually over 90 transferable semester units would be a high unit transfer.
Since you are already a Jr at a CSU, taking a year off, then attending a CSU, then applying to San Diego area CSUs where you may not be accepted is a silly exercise. You can probably graduate in 3 semesters or less, then move to SD and get a job. That would have you in SD in less than 18 months.
What’s the impetus for this plan?
@irena2000x my daughter is in the process of preparing to transfer and according to the SDSU website you are considered “local” if you complete 100% of your credits from SDSU’s local CC (Mesa/Miramar/City/Grossmont/Southwestern) and because she took a course in highschool that also received credit from Palomar College (not in the local SDSU area) she was already disqualified from applying as a “local”! This was a bit of a shock since nothing was ever said in HS and who doesn’t want college credit for a class, right? BUT…if you apply with an ADT, they do not mind if you have some credits outside of the local area as long as the college granting the ADT is in the local area. The problem with this is a lot of the SDSU majors don’t accept the ADT so it gets a little tricky. San Marcos only requires 12 credits be from one of their local feeder CC’s (Palomar/Miracosta) in order to qualify as a local transfer. So…if you are applying to an impacted major (most of SDSU’s majors) using the general path, first priority is local CC graduate with 100% local credits and all prereqs done, #2 is local with some credits from outside the area, all prereqs done etc. (or something like that) There are 5 tiers of acceptance in all - not sure how they are rated…but even if you have a 4.0 GPA but are not local, you will not get in over someone local with a 3.1 GPA so if the major you applied for is filled with local applicants then you have no chance of getting in. If you apply for a “not-so-popular major” then you have a chance.
