Taking a Year Off Options

Hello...I hope this is the right forum to post this in. Please let me know if I should post it under a different topic.

Anyway, I recently started toying with the idea of taking a year off. Since it is mid-July and a lot of applications are due SOON I could use a lot of help on deciding what programs would be good for me to look into.

I am a senior at the University of Michigan with a double-major in Psychology and Creative Writing. I hope to eventually apply to Clinical Psych PhD programs. For my year off, I am interested in something that is a mixture of soul-searching and academia. Please toss me any idea.

I can say this...I am pretty sure I am NOT interested in either Peace or Americorps, unless you know of a program particularly suited toward my psychology interests. Other types of "year off" opportunities do not necessarily have to directly relate to psych, but it's good if they do.

OK SPILL! THANKS!!

A bunch of my psych major friends taking time off before PhD programs are working as lab managers or research assistants.

Have you ever considered work-exchanges to different countries? For example in Canada, we have a program called SWAP that lets you get a working visa in another country and work there for a short period of time. I’m not sure whether the US has a program like that but try searching up USA work-exchange or something along those lines and I’m sure you’ll find something that might interest you!
