taking a year off?!

hey…
im having problems deciding about taking a year off…
I am 16 years old and i will be graduating high school in june at the age of 16…
so technically i am a year (maybe 2 years) ahead of the average high school graduate cuz i skipped a grade and started school early.

I wanted to know if it would be a bad thing to take a year off after getting my bachelors degree…because that is what i really want to do.
I feel that if i take a year off after high school, i will only be 16, and thats is a kind of young age to be off exploring and traveling the world.

If i get into my first choice college, i will be graduating at the age of 19…
would it look bad or would it be hard for me to find a job after a year of traveling after getting a BS degree.

can sum1 just give me the pros and cons or give me any info on this?
thankss…any feedback is greatly appreicated!

It all really boils down to how mature of a person you are. Some people mature quicker than others, and there are some kids that aren't mature to attend college when they are 18 years old. If you think you are ready to get out there and explore, go for it. If not, there's no harm done.

Best of Luck

a desiguyhere... ;) same situation for me. I skipped the 10th and I'm wondering abt what to do. I also started school early. I think its a better idea to go straight ahead into college. u wont be left out unless ur a nerd. really. as long as u dont act very "teen" like, social acceptance is no prob. for maturity, its up to u. depends on what u wanna do though.

so yeah... I decided to continue my education straight ahead. bachelors by 19, masters by 20, PhD by 23. i got my goals set. u should try and get urs too...

yeah...i fit in with people in my grade...and i am definately mature enough to be where i am... (lol)...
so yeah...i think i am just gonna get my bachelors degree right after high school...a 33-month Bachelors degree in Radiation Therapy (dealing with cancer patients)
and this career is mostly filled with people who have an associates degree, so getting a bachelors degree is enough for it...

but 1 more questionn.....if i take a year off after getting this degree...to explore/travel/volunteer in india (my parents were born there and i have really wanted to back to help)....do u think that would look bad in trying to get a job after that year??

I am not sure how to ask this, but are you planning to return to school at a later point to pursue an advanced degree?? I have to assume that you are rather bright and hard driving, possibly home-schooled, to graduate at 16. Some highschoolers take classes at a local college their last 1-2 yrs of HS, so in essence are sophomores or juniors when the "graduate" HS. At any point, what I am getting at is that I am a bit surprised that you are planning to look for a job with a BS (I assume) in Radiation Therapy. There are plenty of jobs in this field, and you would have no problem finding one if you take a year off after college, especially if the college you attend had a good job placement program. It is easier travelling around on your own at 19 or 20 than at 16, as a minor, so I'd recommend you consider that in your plans. Why are you rushing through school?? A 3 yr bachelors program has you outa there at 19. Whats the rush?? Enjoy college and maybe you won't have so much of the wanderlust.... Another option is to do a junior year abroad. I'd suggest you widen your horizons a bit-- don't fly through college to then travel about-- Consider slowing down, combining the two, and enjoying both.

thanks jym626....
no, im not going to return to school to pursue an advanced degree. and ur right...i am bright and hard-driving (lol, that makes me sound so conceited)...but i was never homeschooled, i just went to a great academy when i was like 2 years old....so i 'matured' early and started kindergarden at 3 yrs old. I havent been taking classes at any colleges.
I really like Radiation Therapy, and i love the job that they do. And thanks soooo much for encouraging me for taking a year off after college!!, I really needed it because i was afraid it would be the wrong descision. :-(

If I actually love college, i might go onto get a masters degree in something similar, but if i want to do Radiation THerapy (which i really do want to), then the only college in my state that offers Radiation Therapy offers a three year accelerated degree program.
Also, i will look into the study abroad program, but i doubt i can do that in radiation therapy...because it is a kind of 'specific field'
:-D (now all i have to do is wait...to get an acceptance letter (HOPEFULLY!!) from my college!)

i'm also 2 years ahead and i'd say deffinetly go for it if that's what you really want. you're going to be working for the next 50 some years of your life, take a chance to live a little! it's pretty common for recent grads to take a year off, even among those who aren't already advanced. employers certainly won't hold it against you if you decided to go and see the world, it could even be seen as a bonus (you're not just goign to be sitting around the house watching tv afterall)
