BlueLaser, if money is an issue, stay away from Miami of Ohio. My daughter fell in love with the school, but even with a 31 on the ACT and an almost perfect GPA, they did not offer a nickel in merit aid. The only other school that offered no money at all was the University of Wisconsin at Madision.

We also were a bit concerned about how well dressed the Miami of Ohio girls were. My daughter can’t afford to dress like most of the girls we saw. Coach purses everywhere. :-)

I know it’s a bit expensive, but finding colleges under 20K is a rare find. Covenant College is a Christian liberal arts school and does offer good deals for students from farther away in the States. A large percentage of our students come from farther away in the States and we also have a large number of international students. Just an idea for you.

It’s not a bad school for the physical sciences, but Birmingham is a terrible city. I would not recommend moving here at all, let alone from Massachusetts. You will have to dig to find anything remotely resembling culture. It’s a sordid, wretched town. UAB itself isn’t a bad school, though.

Vderon: Those Coach purses might all be fakes!! You can get them on ebay for nothing…Also, you don’t need a lot of money to dress well. Discount stores abound in MA and you can find great stuff!

If Michigan is on that list, especially for journalism and comm, you should look at Wisconsin. About 10K cheaper/year, one of the top journalism/comm programs in the country at the undergraduate level, and quite a few ways to get involved with “media production” internships/ECs on campus. Only school with 2 independently run daily student papers, for example (www.dailycardinal and www.badgerherald.com). Tons of kids from Baaston, too.

Shoot me a message if you have any questions.

My D’s probable college choice comes to mind. The University of Central Florida has programs in both Film and Digital Media. It is a state of Florida School and I know of two kids who are applying now for the film school. BTW, it is rolling admissions.

Bluelaser- if you are considering SUNY schools, you must look at SUNY Oswego: mass communications/media production is a major emphasis there! Tuition and fees, as at all SUNY schools, would be about $12K OOS. The school’s location also sounds ideal for you in terms of distance, it is about 45 minutes or so due north of Syracuse right on Lake Ontario. Its lakeside location makes it a very scenic campus (although in the winter it is very cold and windy!)

ps- to be a little more specific, look for the Department of Communications Studies on the SUNY Oswego website. Sounds like it might be perfect for your daughter.
