Taking an LPS class...

There's a class that I'm interested in taking in LPS.

1) We can register for these, yes? And there's no catch? Like, will it not count as one of my classes taken in the College (even though it's just psychology) and so then I can take one less outside-the-College class later on? Or should I not be concerned with that?

2) Will I regret having a class in the evenings? I figured that since it's on Wednesdays it won't hamper my social life, but I'm wondering if anyone here has taken a night class and has some insight to share.

Thanks!

I took LPS math. Generally there is no catch. However, for some departments (econ is the only one that I know for sure) you cannot take an LPS course and count it towards the major. That is generally not the case, and it seems some courses are only taught at night.

I think LPS courses count as inside the college, but I’m not sure. Also, those outside the college courses are only for graduation. You can take as many non college courses as you want, but only 4 will count towards your degree. Most college students graduate with more credits than their degrees required.

The only problem I had with night classes were that they are 3 hours long. That is way too long for me. I get bored after 45 or 50 minutes and get restless in 1.5 hour courses. If the professor is good it makes it a lot more bearable.

I’ve taken a few night classes.

One was Tues and Thurs 6-8. Huge mistake. That’s when everyone eats dinner - and that was important freshman year; I’d get out and it would be dark; and many meetings and events are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

I’ve also taken one 6-9 on Monday. That was fine because I didn’t miss any meetings or events. Plus I liked just sitting down once a week and going through all our material. That meant I wouldn’t have to worry about that class until the following weekend. Also the length wasn’t an issue for me because the professor was really good and I loved the material - and this is despite the fact that I came tot his class straight from another 3-hour class with a 30-minute break in between. I was really afraid I wouldn’t be able to stay awake for the whole 6.5 hour stretch but I just brought some snacks and water (and my computer) and it was fine.

There are also a number of Wednesday meetings and events but not as many as on Tuesday and Thursday. If you really like the class, go for it.

LPS courses are geared toward adult students. The professors are much less flexible than day courses… in other words, if you miss a class, you could be screwed. That said, if you don’t have a problem with night courses, go for it! I’m a personal fan of once-a-week three hour courses… they get out of the way and it’s just like… that’s that!
