Hello all,
I am currently an eigth grader in algebra II, and next year will skip pre-calc. Anyone have any feedback, etc?

Uhm, I’d say take AB first.
You won’t have any background in precalc, and it’s gonna be difficult to just skip two years of math like that.
You may be hecka smart, but don’t skip that much.

I would not recommend it. I realize you may be one of those geniuses, but you should take precalc before BC…but if you HAVE TO take AP calc, take AB.

I did it. I went from alg 2 in 8th grade, skipped precal and then my ab teacher suggested I do BC. It’s really easy if you’re a math person

do not and I repeat do not skip precalculus/trigonometry.

What’s even taught in pre-calc? It was all just a review of Algebra 2.

^

Agreed.

my teacher taught us limits in precalc

You do a lot of good trig in precalc (identities, proofs, etc.)

Yeah, Precal really helps you get a good understanding of trigonometry, and I would advise doing Precalc before doing AP Calculus BC.

My son went unto Calc AB from Algebra II and survived it fine. If you’re a Math nerd, you’ll do fine. The bigger question is what does your high school offer after Calc BC. It is a real pain to have to dual enroll in order to have Math classes to take in 11th and 12grades.

I’m planning on going to Troy high in Fullerton because it seems to accomidate myself very well because they are literally less than a minute of walking to cal state Fullerton.

Also, I would be taking AP Chem AP Bio and sophmore I’d take AP Physics C and another course.

I really doubt youll be able to do BC Chem and Bio as a freshman

I’m taking honors chem right now in eighth and have 100% so I’m good there and for AP bio, many schools do not require honors bio.

You definitely can do it. Precalc really is almost the exact same thing as Alg II- my school expects people who want to self study it to cover it in a month since it has so little new content. Calc BC is also not too much more than AB, so don’t be afraid to take it on.

There are books and courses that can help you out- I recommend the AoPS Calc text/class.

Your school almost certainly won’t be able to handle you past Calc BC, so you might want to sign up for EPGY/Stanford OHS if you want to avoid having to dual-enroll.

If you’re Troy material, you’ll have no problem doing it.

Um, how many people at your school have went straight from Algebra II to Calc BC? How did they do?

You will get beat up. Or at least regarded as “that nerd kid” and made fun of behind your back.

But OP’s going to Troy, where this kind of jump isn’t that uncommon.
