So, I signed up to take AP Chem as a junior next year. The thing is that I am not sure if i am good enough at chemistry to take it but I try hard and I want to continue with chemistry. Here are my grades this year in honors chem:
For quarter 4 I still have a decent chance to get an A (89.5+) and also my tests are:
-Acid-Base Tiration and pH: 96
-Reaction energy: 65
-Reaction Kinetics and Equilibrium: 81
From the data above do you think I could handle AP Chem if I put in work or is a lost cause if I am not doing absolutely spectacular (like high As every quarter). I know if I do it I will have to work hard and study a lot though as I will aim to pass exam.
Nobody here knows you nor the rigor of your school. At first glance, it seems like you can handle it, but a conversation with your chem teacher might give you more personal insight.
At my school, the AP Chemistry course (coming from what all of my friends who took the course) is apparently much more different from honors chemistry. They’re all realyl smart and got A+'s in Honors Chemistry, but they’re struggling with AP chemistry. It all depends on your school
AP Chemistry for me was nothing like honors chemistry… so much harder and much more math heavy. AP chem will be easier for you now as a junior because you already took honors and remember the basics. My entire class is struggling lol. It’s a really rough class. It doesn’t have the reputation as the hardest AP and the biggest curve on the AP exam for nothing. I wouldn’t discourage you from taking it just be prepared to work very hard.
As long as you are committed to working hard, then I think you can handle it! But, I would also talk with your chemistry teacher to see what he/ she thinks.
AP Chemistry relies heavily on whether you understand how and why everything works. If you actually understand and are good at using the processes right now and not just the formulas, you’ll be good at AP Chem. Otherwise, have fun.
**note that I have a higher grade in AP Chem than I ever did in Honors Chem, but that’s also because my Honors Chem teacher was ridiculous and took off points for things like putting the wrong date on your homework. However, I have friends who are doing much, much worse in AP Chem than they did in Honors Chem, so take that as you will.
I agree with the others. I’m currently taking AP Lang, Physics 1, APUSH, and Chem, and Chem is by far the one I have to work the hardest to get an A in.
