Hi I'm going into my junior year in highschool next year and I need some advice on what classes to take :)
Like I was wondering if Rice likes students who get more AP credits before their senior year?

I only have APHG so far, but I'll be taking EngIII AP, APUSH, ChemII AP for sure next year. I'm also trying to just test (without the class) for US Govt/politics this year (does anyone have any advice for this test?).

So far, my junior yr schedule is
Orchestra, ChemII AP, APUSH, Eng III AP, (and probably Programming II which is honors but i can take the computer science AP test)

So now, I'm trying to skip out of Precal to get into BC Calc and I'm confused on what sciences to take.
I can either do physics preap or BioII AP so i'm confused on whether or not taking bioII ap is worth it.
Does Rice see if I have a certain amount of Ap credits by the end of junior year? my mom says you need a minimum of 6 but she's not very knowledgeable in these things.

I'm sorry this post is so cluttered but registration is due next Tues and I'm really confused right now. thanks mucho :)

Your strength of schedule does contribute to the evaluation of your application. That being said, you can take hard classes and do well without having to take AP’s or a certain quota of them.

Basically, Rice needs to know that you arent taking easy classes, but they do not have any expectations on what AP’s you take and when. AP’s help your transfer credit more than anything, so take the AP’s you might want to test out of in college

I don’t think there’s a real “minimum” for AP credits. They want to see that you take a challenging course load (from what I’ve heard), but it’s more about using your school’s resources than taking a certain number of AP courses. For instance, at my school, there were only two AP courses available for me to take before my senior year–now there is only one, as the other got canceled. I took both of them and another test on my own–it’s not 6 credits, but I used the resources at my high school as best I could.

sorry I meant Bio II

what do you mean placing out of bioII?
like taking the ap test without the class?

also do you guys think i should take Spanish IV AP? do college like if you go to AP spanish? because i really hate spanish and am not good at it at all…

What are you thinking about majoring in? I’m just saying that according to that earlier thread Chem and Bio intro classes might be good to place out of.
The Spanish AP test wasn’t a cake walk for my S/D. Their school did not follow the AP syllabus at all. I don’t know anything about taking AP test without taking the course first. I have heard of students doing that though.

I honestly have no idea at all of what I want to major in…
i’ll probably take Bio II AP senior year along with statistics and Calculus BC(if i don’t pass the precal test this summer).

Yea I’m worried Spanish IV will kill me because I’m having trouble in SPanish III preap haha
but I heard that schools like it if you continue with things you start with instead of giving up half way…that’s why i’m also doing tennis afterschool :P

My S was accepted ED, he submitted 3 AP’s. Have you taken SAT/ACT yet?

how many AP’s did his school offer? and did he have lots of EC and a good rank?
I took the psat and did horrible…188ish so i need to study for that during the summer
haven’t done the real big test though

His school dropped all AP classes a few years ago and does not rank. He did have good test scores and above average EC’s. Have you tried the ACT? It might be a better test for you.

oh…i guess i’ll try an ACT practice test soon.
Do you have to take both ACT and SAT anyways? would i still have to get a good score on the SAT?

You don’t need to take both. You can either take the ACT (with the writing section) or the SAT with 2 subject tests. There’s no harm in taking both tests to see how you do. My daughter took both and ended up doing better on the ACT than the SAT, but because she’d also done well on the SAT subject tests, we submitted everything to Rice. They just look at your best scores. (She’s a junior at Rice now.)

^^ Absolutely. If you have time and the capacity, try both. I personally only took the SAT (although I took 5 subject tests) and submitted everything to Rice.

Some of my friends took the ACT. Rice doesn’t care as long as you do well.

Is there a big difference between the ACT and the SAT?

The SAT is an aptitude test and measures reasoning and problem solving. The ACT is more based on what you learned and it tests that.

Rice considers both. Some people do better on the ACT while some do better on the SAT.
