How rude would it be to tell a teacher you've already asked that you no longer need or necessarily want a rec from them? Is there any kind way of doing this?

It’s very rude and unprofessional.

Just tell them and don’t elaborate. It’s less work for them, I don’t think they’ll mind.

Very rude. Is there some specific reason (like you need a rec from a different subject area)?

it comes off as very rude because it will seem like you found someone better than them. There better be a good reason that justifies it.

They won’t mind if you tell th before they write it. Writing reccs is a lot of work. They won’t mind not having to do a time consuming favor.

I just feel like one of the teachers I asked is not aware of the caliber of schools I am applying to. I’m afraid he’ll make it like any other rec.

If you’re worried that your teacher isn’t aware of the competitiveness of the schools you’re applying to, you could always set up a meeting with him to talk about the schools or yourself. I’m sure he would get a better idea of what to write.
