Taking Biochem after AAMC app is already submitted??

Hey guys,

I am currently a sophomore Bio major. I plan on doing the traditional track to med school right after college, and taking my MCATS end of jr. year.

I am taking orgo right now, and will be taking physics my jr year, along with prepping for mcats.

Only issue is that ive seen a lot of schools strongly recommend biochem. It is only offered during the spring at my school, and is known to be extremely time consuming here, so my options are to take it spring jr year (while studying for mcats), or to take it spring of senior year (which i want to do).

Since I will be applying before/beginning my senior year to medical schools, will they be satisfied if i put biochem as a future course? Or are these one of those courses that they want done before you apply? I just dont want to be put at any kind of a disadvantage, which is why i want to take biochem in the first place.

Some schools like UMich even have Biochem as a requirement.

Biochem isnt otherwise covered by my major.

Thanks!

Other seasoned posters may correct me if I am wrong, but I think that is completely acceptable. D is taking it next year (senior year) as well after her apps are submitted.

On the place on the AMCAS where you list your classes, you can indicate that it’s a future course. I also took biochem the semester before I graduated. No big deal at all.

It does not matter whne you take any class as long as you have taken it before matriculating into school that reguires it. More schools are adding BioChem (and some other classes) to their requirements. Pre-med advisory at UG should be informed and pass it down to each pre-med applying to these schools.
Actually, if you did not have a chance to indicate requirement as a future course because you have changed your schedule after submitting to AMCAS, it is still OK even if you did not update your application with your new schedule. D. is at interview today at Med. School that has added 2 classes to its requirements after D. has submitted her application. One class she is taking right now, another (BioChem) she is planning to take next semester.
