At my high school, there's this really dumb rule that you have to take a honors version of an AP course before going to the actual AP course (I have to take U.S. Government Honors and then AP U.S. Government). So far I've been able to get around this and go straight to the AP courses, but not this year (unless I take FLVS).

Both courses are calculated into my GPA. However will colleges take both the Honors and AP course (the same course, i.e. Honors Bio and AP Bio) when recalculating the GPA or will they only take the "higher" course? Also what if I took an honors version of a course after the fact? Like let's say I took World History Honors after AP World History, would that affect anything? Or would have that been useless?

Because all this would be a waste of time when I could be taking other (more meaningful) courses.

My school has the same rule. You have to take the honors class before the AP class, although some people can get around these rules.

Like I took Honors Biology in 9th grade and I am taking AP Biology in 11th grade. Just like how I took U.S. History in 9th grade and am taking AP U.S. History in 11th grade as well. I don’t see it as a big deal.

Colleges will take both classes when calculating your GPA.

My School only has that rule for classes like
AP Bio, Chem , physics anything else we can just take.
I would suggest taking them on FLVS but thats just me.

Do you have to take the honors class the same year as the AP class? I think most schools make you take an honors or basic course before you take the AP version, that is, for some classes. Also, does your school make you take one semester of the honors course and the other semester is AP?

@Alarmed Thanks! I’m going to keep taking Honors classes too, then.

@Weeknd Yeah I’m going to take as many FLVS classes as possible on top of my school courses!

@Foodlover001 Yep, you do. This year I did get AP U.S. History and AP Literature without going through an honors class first though. And yes, it’s usually 1 semester Honors and the next AP.

In the county I live in, we have to take biology/biology honors in 9th grade, chemistry/chemistry honors in 10th grade, and then we can take AP Biology and/or AP Chemistry in 11th and 12th grade. Physics/physics honors is taken in 11th, so most people double up by also taking an AP science class. I don’t think we have a system where one semester is honors and one semester is AP. How much credit do you get for the honors and AP class?

We have that rule for the science courses and there are various prerequisites for ap studio art.

my school has the same rule. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, colleges will probably know

Well some courses in my school don’t even have an honors version. For example, we don’t have an Honors Physics, so most people use AP Physics B as their first year physics if they plan on taking Physics C.
However, we have Honors Chem and Bio as well as having the AP versions. These are by far the exceptions though, as I can’t think of any other class like that.
