Taking Calc at ACC

Hi everyone

Because of scheduling issues and such, I was considering possibly taking Calc 408k at ACC in the fall instead of at UT. Does anyone have any experience in doing this, and if so, how did it go? What is the difficulty level of the classes at ACC compared to those at UT? Also, for those who have experience, or just want to share their opinions, will it not look as good to take a class at ACC rather then taking it at UT.

Thank you in advance for your remarks.

Check with your UT Dean’s office first. Some UT colleges/schools place limitations on simultaneous enrollment another institution. Even if you successfully complete and transfer the course, they may refuse to count the transfer credit toward your degree if you didn’t have their prior approval.

What is your major? If calc is a pre-req for you but you don’t really need it, try taking calc at HCC with M. Shagroni. All his tests and homeworks are online so you don’t have to worry about getting to the testing center by a deadline. I wouldn’t recommend it if you need to know calc really well because it is self-taught.

I’m an Econ major, so Calc is pretty important for me to be able to grasp. Would I be allowed to take a class at HCC if I am a student at UT Austin?

Yes! I took it during the spring semester. But, you have to be highly motivated to teach yourself. You have an online textbook, online notes and videos that correspond w/the text book. The teacher is open to answering questions via email. If you’re self-motivated and good at teaching yourself math, I’d go for it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t do online. There are calc tutoring nights in the econ building though, as well as micro/marco if you’ll be taking those.

If you end up taking it at HCC: I had to get my UT counselor to confirm that I could take calc at HCC because they have a policy that you needed pre-cal at their institution.

(btw, juts in case you haven’t taken micro, try to get sibley and not hickenbottom. For macro I had Mostashari and she wasn’t so great but the other teacher wasn’t either.)

Good luck!!

@Kattrain I am actually going to have Hickenbottom in the fall. Is there a reason you dont recommend hickenbottom?

He’s a notoriously confusing teacher, even his former TAs say he writes his tests in such a way as to trick his students into the wrong answer. I never had him personally, but I helped friends study for micro who had him and his questions were often vague and confusing. He also subbed once for Sibley in my class and made a pretty simple concept seem very hard in lecture.

If you can’t get into another class via waitlist or schedule shuffling, expect to invest a lot of time into Micro. If you go onto myedu, the grade distribution for the different teachers demonstrates the different difficulties of each teacher. Wiseman is still open if you want an easier time.

@Kattrain I actually really wanted Wiseman but it says that his classes are, “Restricted to Plan I and Plan II Honors majors in the College of Liberal Arts and to students in the McCombs School of Business Honors Program.” And the only other professor is also full, but it seems like the grade distribution between Hickenbottom and Hamermesh (other professor) is just about the same.
