Taking Chem 111A without high school physics?

I just met with my four year advisor and she recommended that I do no take general chem first year because I have never taken physics. Apparently Chem 111A is very physics based. Would it be really hard for me if I took the class anyways? I have taken AP Chemistry and got a 4 on it. Thanks.

I had neither real physics nor chemistry (I took them in high school, yes, but both classes were a joke). The physics in chem 111A is like p-chem lite. In other words, physics 117/197 and 118/198 really won’t help all that much.

Either way, only 198 covers similar topics (118 does not) - while it was nice because it gave a better explanation than 111 does, it’s not necessary to do well in 111.

So what it comes down to - why do you want to take chem??? You HAVE to take chem 111 now if you want to take bio 2960 in the spring (there are exceptions, but 1 in 600 people exceptions). Not taking 2960 in the spring could mean you don’t finish the basic bio sequence until half-way through your junior year, which is an issue for some majors.

But on the other hand, if you’re a polisci major thinking of taking chem for the fun of it, it’s fine to wait a year.

Also, who is your advisor? This is advice I’ve never heard before and I’m curious what angle they’re coming from.

Well I’m planning on going on the pre-med track and almost every handbook advises to take general chem as a freshmen. So my advisor got me totally stressed out because she advised me not to when that would totally mess up the sequences of classes before the MCAT. My advisor is Christine Street. Thanks for your input. It really helped

Then I hold what I said - definitely take 111 now. Waiting until your junior year to take orgo can make things very stressful for you mcat wise (I personally would not want to have to double up biochem and orgo). You could certainly take one of the sequences (either 111/112 or 261/262) over the summer at some point, but your advisor shouldn’t essentially be telling you that it’s necessary.

Google searching tells me Christine Street is the Assistant Director for disability resources? I’m sure she’s well meaning, but I’m not sure she knows what she’s talking about.

Something I didn’t mention earlier: while I did not take AP physics, my friends who did were not at an advantage (note- my friends who took ap chem were indeed at an advantage in chem 112). The physics in chem 111 isn’t something you’re really going to see in the majority of intro physics classes.

FWIW- I’m not pre-med, never have been. But I’ve taken every pre-med class because I was bme for a few years.

Other than this- I hope orientation is going well! This is the first year I haven’t been on campus since day 1 for the freshmen (I’m a senior). It’s odd. Can’t wait to get back :)

Thanks a whole lot! This really puts my mind at rest
