I was at the bio major's fair today, and one of the schedule-planning forms I got recommended that students not take these two classes at the same time. Why exactly is this? Is it too hard to schedule other classes around those two, because they're both 5 unit classes, or is it just physically impossible to pull off doing well in both if you take them simultaneously? If it is really difficult to do, which class is more manageable to take during the summer?

Its not impossible, but its sooooo tiring (I would imagine, since I haven’t taken Bio 1A still, luckily). That’s 8 am everyday, two 4 hour labs a week, 2 lab reports a week, bio quizzes, etc. Most of the tough work comes from Bio 1A because the lab is so much work. I don’t know which one is better in the summer…it matters if you can take an accelerated curriculum but it have it not be as much material versus learning more but have more time to do it. I’m glad I don’t have to touch Bio 1A.

well you can take those classes separately from their lab classes.

but 3b/l + 1a/l at the same time is just too much work. don’t do it, especially if you’re pre-med because you’re risking your gpa.

You could take Bio 1A/L and Chem 3B ONLY… then take 3BL in the summer. I know someone that did that.

They’re both classes that require a lot of tedious weekly preparation, especially Bio1AL. Chem 3B involves a lot more mechanisms and reagents and 3BL requires weekly labs with lots of NMR spectra. Bio 1A is webcasted, but it also covers a lot of material in a short amount of time. It’s already bad enough taking these two individually. A friend of mine who did this combination last semester pretty much almost died. Yeah. Not to scare anybody, but just don’t do it.

bio 1al…

Shudders

run. just run from this idea.

Thanks so much for the replies, guys. I’m really glad that I asked. What about taking bio1A and Chem3BL simultaneously and taking chem3B in summer? It’s so tricky to decide because I don’t want to overburden myself either semester : /

You can’t take 3BL before 3B. Sorry :(

Ah I meant that I would take chem3B first over the summer and the lab the subsequent semester. Sorry, I didn’t convey that clearly.

So you’d take Chem 3B in Summer 2012, then Bio 1A and Chem 3BL in Fall 2012? That could work. When will you take Bio 1AL?

Don’t 1A and 1AL have to be taken concurrently?

Apparently, yes. So Bio 1A/L and Chem 3BL at the same time? Sounds tiring, but doable, especially if you don’t take any other intense letter-graded classes.
