Taking Chemistry in the summer

Hey guys,

I know in general it's best to shy away from taking the required sciences during the summer. I have read the general premed advice and understand the logic of why it is not ideal.

But because of a scheduling conflict, it looks like I will have to take Chemistry over the summer.

My question is, if everything else is stellar (GPA, MCAT, clinical experience, etc.) how much will taking one requirement (Chemistry) over the summer hurt my overall application. I don't know if it matters, but I will be taking the course at my undergrad institution, Johns Hopkins, and not at a different university or community college.

especially since it’s your home institution, it won’t make a difference at all.

I wouldn’t say “won’t make a difference at all” because one thing that admissions committees consider is course load, ie how well you can do in a class when you’re also doing other things (classes, activities, etc). That said, I doubt it would have a significant impact, especially if you don’t make a habit of taking requirements over the summer.
