I am chinese. it's spoken at home, but i speak it on the minimum. I understand cantonese when it is spoken to me, but usually I have a hard time speaking back( i have the urge to speak English). My dad isn't a help because he speaks english and thinks I don't understand chinese. He makes it an effort to translate to english everything my mom says in chinese, which is annoying b/c i got it the first time.

However, that is besides the point. What type of Chinese course would i take?
I don't know how to read or write Chinese. I would be fine learning cantonese or mandarin. The most basic is CHIN 1101. It's 6 credits and I'm wondering if I should try to get into the 4 credit courses instead.

if you are chinese, chances are they wont let you take the 6 credit course. the 4 credit course is for people who exp chinese at home but can’t read/write or speak well. so chances are you will be in the 1109 class (class is a lott of work)

is it really? if i take chinese, i’ll have exactly 18 credits for the first term and i wanted to start off my freshman year with a decent gpa

If you understand Cantonese but not Mandarin and can’t read or write Chinese, you shouldn’t have any problems enrolling in CHIN 1101 (Beginning Mandarin I). There were many Cantonese speakers in the class this past year, including myself.

is chin 1101 harder than 1109?

i was in 1109, there were many cantonese and other dilect speakers in my class too… in my year i heard as long as you can write your name in chinese, it doesn’t matter what you speak, you go to 1109. though i had a friend who spoke cantonese and knew a lot of mandarin but pretended she couldn’t write or understand any of it… and the teacher let her into 1101 and she ended up with 6 cr of A+.

1109 is a LOT harder than 1101… if you can, take 1101…, 1109 is pretty useless… you spend your days memorizing poems written in traditional chinese and in ancient cihnese grammar. you’ll have no idea what its talking about but you got to memorize them anyway. thats y i didn’t like 1109

1109 sounds a lot like the chinese school my mom sent me to. I failed , ranking 30 in a class of 32 kids. okay, I’ll try 1101 then. but what do i do if its too many credits? I’m looking at 19 credits and a PE class

Well, you simply can’t have more than 18 credits as a first-year student. You will have to put off something that you planned on doing in the first semester. Be sure to check any AP/IB credits that you may have earned; as high AP/IB exam scores can cover certain course-credit requirements.

I’m hoping i get out of taking one freshman writing seminar course. If i do opt out of one, I’ll take it in spring instead. or is fws useful for a freshman in the fall?

If you’re only taking one FWS, it doesn’t really matter if you take it in the fall or in the spring…the only difference is the topics/teachers available.
