Will colleges look unfavorably at Asian-American, particularly Chinese-American, applicants taking Chinese in High School, say vs. taking a Western world language? Many Chinese Americans do not know mandarin or know it with any fluency, but will colleges see taking Mandarin Chinese as either not being diverse in thinking or taking an easy way out? Thanks for any feedback.

I don’t really see why they would, unless you already spoke that language. I mean, my ancestors were originally from Germany and they wouldn’t look down on me taking German.

I think they only discriminate against native speakers. How they determine if you are a native speaker, I don’t know.

I’m half Chinese and I’m taking Mandarin at school too.
