if you take a class twice, can you replace the first grade earned with the second?

google “ucsd repeating classes” and you’ll see this: [How to Repeat a Class](How to Repeat a Class)

Yes. For the first 16 units that you repeat, the repeated grade will replace the first. However, all the grades you’ve earned will still show up on your transcript, but only the replaced grade will count towards your UC gpa.

^ this applies ONLY if you didn’t pass it the first time around. retaking a class for which you received a C- will not change anything about that grade.

so there’s no way to replace the grade if you didn’t get below a C-?

There’s always bribery, sob stories, and having your parents call the professor.

Also realize that some graduate school admissions will count both grades in their calculations of your GPA. If your ultimate goal is to spend a few more years in school, failing a borderline class with the intention of retaking it is not a good move (yet I’ve seen people do it before).
