taking classes at a community college/university

well ive heard that colleges look favorably upon a student’s doing well in an actual college course. summer after freshman year, i took summer school at my high school so that I could take more honors classes the following school year. summer after sophomore year, I took an Advanced Creative Writing course at Northwestern University for Honors high school credit–not college credit (got As both semesters). now im a junior, and i just realized that i should probably take a class at a community college or university this summer. unfortunately, its too late to sign up for a college class at northwestern, and its too late to get a scholarship for a free class at my local community college.

so, i have two questions

 1. can anyone name some universities that have online classes available at a decent price or offer financial aid?

 2. think it’s even necessary for me to take a class this summer just to impress colleges? after all, i have a job at a movie theater and about to get another as a telemarketer and plan on working over 40 hours a week this summer to save up a lil bit for college–think that work experience would be an adequate substitute for yet another class?

thanks a lot, i appreciate it

I heard that Stanford has an online school (EPGY i think), and I think its at a reasonable price (300?) . They also provide fee waivers for those who find it hard to affoed these courses.

are there similar programs offered by other universities?? also, how are online courses usually in terms of the way tests and lectures are given ?

thanks

Basically you read each chapter (they have an online textbook) and then answer quizzes which are relatively easy.

I'm not sure...because it looks like I'm a spoiled brat and my parents are just paying for the classes I'm taking....

Don't take classes just to impress a universities...take them either because you're bored and you want something challenging to do over the summer (it doesn't seem like you'll have a problem with that) or because you're interested in a particular subject and you feel the need to learn more about it.

taking online classes is an easy way to boost your GPA bigtime!!!

only if your hs accepts the credit.

I'm taking a course at Northeastern this summer for 3 college credits. They have a bunch of courses open to high school kids, so I'm sure other big colleges do too. After I get this prerequisite done at the university I can take more related courses on line. I'm doing it because I want to have more to do this summer and it's a cool course(graphics for web design).
