When I visited UNC, my tour guide said that students have the opportunity to take classes at Duke if an equivalent class is not offered at UNC. Does anyone know anything about this? I know that's true with the Robertson Scholars program, but are other students able to do this as well?

Regular students can also. A friend of mine is. They have a Robertson bus that goes between the campuses every half hour.

I think there is a limit to the number of classes you can take there though.

If not a Robertson, I believe that you can only take classes that are not offered at UNC.

Every UNC-Chapel Hill student can take up to one course each semester at Duke if there is no equivalent course offered at Carolina. Similarly, every Duke student can take up to one course each semester at UNC-Chapel Hill if there is no equivalent course offered at Duke.

People really should take advantage of this more – people complain that it’s near-impossible to get into photography courses at UNC if you’re not in the program, for example. They can just find a photo course at Duke that has no exact equivalent at UNC and take it! Also, there are a lot of advanced courses at each campus that are not offered at the other.

The Robertson bus runs every half-hour from the UNC-Chapel Hill Morehead Planetarium stop to Duke’s West Campus (Chapel) stop. It’s really convenient – I ride it several times a week, and the nice thing about it is that you can get work done while on it. The Robertson program is even looking into getting wireless internet access on the bus. Check out the schedule: http://robertsonscholars.org/index.php?type=static&source=68

(Robertson Scholars at both UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke can take an unlimited number of courses at either school, whether or not they are offered at their home campus. Also, if a major/minor/certificate is not offered at their home campus, Robertsons can complete the program at the sister campus.)

Thank you for the information! I will be sure to take advantage of that opportunity next year.

PS I have an advising appointment on Tuesday and will be asking about this, so I’ll update you guys.

So if you go to UNC and take a course at Duke, do you pay UNC tuition or Duke tuition?

UNC tuition.
