Taking Classes Outside of Your Major

Hello people, I am a 21 year old CCC student that is transferring to SLO in the Fall as an aerospace engineering major. I am really excited to start and can hardly contain myself when I consider the fact that I’m finally gonna go off to such a respected university.

I have a question, however. Though I am pretty passionate about the field of aerospace engineering, I am also very interested in electronics and the applications of electrical engineering on aeronautical systems. With that in mind, I was just wondering if it was possible to take electrical engineering classes while I follow the AE coursework. The reason I ask is that I understand that the administration is quite picky in regard to letting engineering students attempt a minor, which kinda makes me think they would be hesitant to let me follow two different engineering curriculum. Has anyone tried doing something similar to this before?

Any response would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It’s definitely possible, provided you can get into them (some spots may be reserved for majors). Some EE classes, or other classes outside your majorly, likely count as tech electives for you as well.

Hi Lachesis, I will also be an aerospace engineering transfer this fall. I have a off topic question that you might have some insight on. Do you happen to know if transfer students have to take introductory aero courses, or can we just jump straight into aerodynamics and such classes?

Hey Patriots4, I’m not 100% sure, but I’m assuming we’re gonna have to take the introductory classes because of the fact that a good portion of the lower division aero classes are prerequisites for the upper division ones. Are you done with the rest of the lower division coursework? (i.e. statics. dynamics, mechanics of materials, etc.)

Yeah I am done with all the lower division ones already

How about the possibility of taking classes completely outside of engineering. Am also an Aero transfer into SLO, but really also want to also continue taking Japanese language and culture classes. Possible? I agree that incoming transfers will probably have to take the intro/ freshman Aero classes so that we have the pre-reqs for upper division aero classes. Just hoping that spots are held in the freshman classes for us transfers…

It’s definitely possible to take classes way outside your major, such as Japanese in your case. This could potentially effect your graduation date, but if you have room in your schedule, go for it. I know someone who’s stuck here for more than four years cause he couldn’t get major classes he needed, so he ended up taking some classes outside his major just for fun.
