Taking classes outside your school?

Does anyone know if it's possible for a journalism major at CAS to take classes outside of CAS, like a theatre class at Tisch?

A lot of classes are restricted to those who only have that particular major. I would say it’s pretty difficult for a journalism major (or any other major, for that matter) to enroll in a theatre class, since admission to Tisch is pretty particular in the first place. However, it should be easier to take other classes in different schools–for instance, you can take a variety of comm classes in Steinhardt. However, I would say that specialized courses such as theatre would be fairly difficult to enroll in.

You can definitely take some theatre classes at Tisch through the Open Arts program they offer: [Cross Registration: Tisch School of the Arts at NYU](<a href=“Special Programs”>Special Programs)

You just won’t be able to double major in it. I don’t know about the policy on minors though.

The drama classes offered through the Tisch Open Arts Curriculum are open to non-Tisch students. This is the purpose of them. You will not, however, be able to take any of the same classes as Tisch drama majors. There is no minor in Drama offered.

^
Wrong. Tisch kids can take those classes too.

rszanto: I don’t think anyone said Tisch students couldn’t…

yes, you can take classes through the open arts curriculum (as someone else said)!

BEWARE, however, because you cannot take more than 16 credits outside of CAS without petitioning to Dean something-or-other. So don’t overdo it freshman year if you know you want to take more classes later, or do the producing minor or something.

Whoops! I guess I am slowly starting to lose my mind while waiting for August 24th to swing by…

Oo how is the Producing minor? Do you know? Is it good for film majors to take up?

I don’t think you would need to. All you would have to do would be to sign up for the producing classes during sophmore, junior, and senior years. I think that option is more for CAS students. Although, I have been wrong before…

yeah, a lot of film majors take it! anyone in CAS, Stern or Tisch can do it though.
