Taking community college courses in the summer...

I'm thinking about taking a few community college courses over the summer before I attend UW in the Fall in order to get a head start on the General Education requirements. I was wondering if anyone else has done this in the past or is planning to do the same? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I find that this is pretty common. Check to make sure the credits actually map over to UW course credits (just in case!). Send the transcripts over to UW when you’re done with the class.

Great! Thank you, speedsolver!

I even know current UW students that take CC classes over the summer and then transfer the classes over to save $$$

One thing to consider is that you can only transfer 90 credits. If you already have 90 credits, you might want to drop those classes. I dropped my summer schedule after i got my acceptance letter because I was already at the limit.

Specifically, you can only transfer up to 90 lower division (100 or 200 level) classes. You can transfer up to 135 credits in total.

This is important as some classes that are 100 or 200 level at the community college actually transfer as a 300 level (or higher) class at UW. For example, my nutrition and genetics class were lower division at seattle central, but split into upper & lower at UW

Thank you very much, travelgirl and Sumanye! Really appreciate it!

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to take a 5-credit summer class at a CC and apply it to my degree. However, I hadn’t considered the transfer credit restriction before.

My grade report says the following…
Extension Credits Allowed: 15.0
Transfer Credits Allowed: 83.0

Does this mean I should be okay to take the class? I already know that it transfers over to the UW in terms of equivalency. I’m just confused as to the difference between extension and transfer credits…I have 140 credits overall, with 39.5 earned at the UW.

The class i want to take is 200-level.

I’m going to try to see an advisor tomorrow, but I thought I’d ask here too.

I believe that If you take it, it will be just added to your “pool” of available credits, from which you can take the needed and apply towards your requirements. In other words, if those 100.5 credits weren’t enough to satisfy all lower-division requirements at the UW, then yes, you can do it and transfer it, and apply towards your degree.

@seatac: Cool. :)

It’s not really a need, but I have the leeway to take about 10 credits of non-business electives and I want this to be one of them.
