hi. in general, if you decide to take a class that you "passed out of" by virtue of a high enough AP score, do you still get a letter grade that affects your GPA?

specifically, i want to take math 16a and 16b. I've already taken a handful of upperdiv math/stats and just want to take the 16 series for the easy, effortless 8 units of A.
would it still work? I never took math 1a/1b or 16a/16b because I passed out of with a 5 on the BC exam like 3 years ago. just want to know if this is a legit plan or not.

Yes, the grades will count and the AP credit will be erased.

But someone who looks at your transcript may see what you did (taking 16A-16B after taking upper division math) and think less highly of you because of that. Besides, why waste time and tuition doing that?

Or are you planning on applying to law school or some other professional school that you think may look at GPA without noticing the obvious GPA gamesmanship?

lol nope, i just want some shiny stoles at graduation of course! :)

i don’t intend on wasting too much time, as I will probably only go to class for the midterm and final and to turn in the hw which shouldnt take too long.

i would take other classes that i perceive as “easy” but the first ones that come to mind is the 16-series.

i’m not too good at classes that require memorization or need papers.

Well you may not get credit for taking 16A or 16B if they say stuff like “won’t get credit after taking such and such class.”

I’m doing the same thing with Bio 1A after taking MCB 102 and MCB 104 though

^thanks for the heads up, i’ll just call the department tomorrow

Math 16A and Math 16B are 3 units each, so 6 units.

^ffs good call. at least borcherds is teaching 1a, heard that class with him was a joke and he does the questions to the final in class examples…

Together, these links indicate that if you have taken 1A and 1B, you can’t get credit for 16A and 16B. It isn’t clear if you haven’t taken neither 1A nor 1B and, alternatively, began at 53.

It would still look ridiculous if someone looked at your transcript. It would be analogous to a high school student who completes calculus BC and then takes algebra 1 afterward.
