Taking expensive things to college: hobbies

Hey everyone,

I recently started learning photography (I have a DSLR now), it is one of my big hobbies. I'm going to college in the fall and was wondering, is it really worth it bringing my DSLR to college or should I leave it at home?

I also play guitar (can't live w/o it), and I will be bringing my guitar as well.

I don't really know how much time I will have for photography b/c I was going to attend a few clubs at my college, plus guitar would take away some time too.

But, in general, do kids usually bring their cameras/video cameras/guitars/other expensive things with them to college? How big are the chances that your stuff will be stolen?

Thanks!

If you lock your door whenever you leave you’ll be fine (as long as your roommate does the same). That said, I don’t know if I’d bring a nice guitar to college. It might be worth your while to just get a beater one you don’t mind if it gets damaged a bit during transit to/from school or by someone else accidentally.

Cameras, yes. I have four here with me (I’m big into photography)- an slr (my baby, I swear), a dslr, a point and click (although I refuse to use it anymore), and an old fasioned awesome thing from the 1940’s. Also have a ton of film, lenses, and chemicals to develop my own things.

Just lock your door.

Also, I’d suggest never leaving your camera in plain view. Keep it in a bag of some sorts.
You’ll be surprised by the number of people who have dslr’s in college- even people who don’t know how to do anything other than use the auto setting.

I think a lot of people who are like art/photo majors probably have all sorts of stuff. Keep it locked in a drawer or safe and keep your room door locked and you’ll be fine.

RacinReaver, I really don’t wanna buy a beater guitar bc I like to play on what I have now. I live only 5 hrs from my college so the transit shouldn’t be that bad. Plus I have a hard case for the guitar - and that’s where I plan to store my guitar in my dorm room.

Johnson181, ah, thanks  I’ll think about it. Maybe I’ll leave it at home first and then see how much time I have for photography. If it turns out that I do have time - I’ll bring it with me after the fall break.

By the way, are laptop locks still in fashion? Should I get one?

I have a laptop lock, I used it the first week in the dorm, and then stopped using it…

Also, as of note, it may be handy to bring your dslr for other clubs (we take pictures of EVERYTHING in one of my groups, lol).

Definitely get a laptop. I take mine everywhere.

If you’re bringing something small and extremely valuable (like a pricy camera) invest in a safe. I know it sounds paranoid, but you don’t know your roommate or their friends.

I think laptops are expensive enough, and everyone has one. I even see people leaving their laptops around all the time. Keep your door locked and you’ll be fine
