taking extra classes online while in high school, how does that work with transfer?

I know community college students wanting to transfer to UC/CSU are required to send in transcripts from ALL colleges ever attended, but I'm having trouble figuring out whether this online class my sister took is considered high school or college credit.

My sister took Algebra 2 online from National University Virtual High School during one of her summer breaks while she was still in high school. I'm not sure if this is really considered college coursework...

Now she is a community college student wanting to apply to transfer next year. The question is whether National University Virtual high School is considered a high school or a college - in the latter case I assume she'd have to send in a transcript from them as well when she applies to transfer to a UC..

BTW, she had A's both semesters. UC's apparently do accept National University credit, I just don't know whether they'd consider it college or high school credit.

EDIT: on the UC site it seems to classify this as a high school..but still I'm unsure

I would call the admissions department at each school and ask directly. It’s the only way to know for sure.

I’d err to caution and just send in a transcript and note it on classes taken - it won’t hurt any :)

NUVHS is a UC-approved virtual high school. I assume the class is listed as UC a-g approved at <a href=“A-G Policy Resource Guide”>A-G Policy Resource Guide. The class will not count toward her UC-transferable units for transfer admission, but she may need to submit the transcript if she is admitted to, and decides to enroll at, one of the UCs that require HS transcripts.

Thank you Ms. Sun, that makes sense. Yes, it’s a UC approved A-g course., but wouldn’t the credit already show on her actual high school transcript?

I actually asked this same question through your free advice e-mail before you responded here LOL, I’m sorry! Please ignore the email then.

xinglliang, no worries, I thought the question looked familiar :)

The UCs need the original transcript from each high school she attended (but remember this only applies to UCs that require HS transcripts for transfers; not that many of them do).

It just got more complicated :/

I emailed UC Davis and they confirmed that NUVHS is considered high school curriculum, and so they said she wouldn’t have to send in a separate transcript from them…

BUT, UC Davis also happens to be one of the few UC’s that does require high school transcripts for transfer students (as it says below). So now I’m confused

UC Davis responded to me by email.
They only require high school transcripts for sophomore level transfers. For junior level transfers you don’t HAVE to send them in

although I swear I’ve heard some people say they were required to anyway even though they were junior transfers…strange

There are always exceptions and the campuses may request transcripts for a variety of reasons. I found the right PDF document with the HS transcript information: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/files/ETS12_NextStepsForTransferMatrix_final_05142012.pdf</a>, page 2 under “High School Transcript Required?” Davis only asks for transcripts for less than junior level transfers (as do Merced and Riverside). Irvine, San Diego, and Santa Cruz require HS transcripts from everyone, and Santa Barbara requires them for students who don’t have IGETC.

You send in the HS transcript if you want them to count that you’ve taken a certain american history class to fulfill a certain requirement. :)
