Taking extra HS classes over the summer?

I'm a junior currently, and I'm in a bit of a bad situation when it comes to colleges. I have the SATs and, generally, the EC's to get into my first choice schools, but because of a health issue I've had, I don't have the GPA. It's low. UW, probably about an 87, and weighted, about a 90. I'd like to get it up to a 94ish, weighted, before apps go out in the fall. I'm taking 4 AP's currently, and the weighting doesn't go through until the end of the year, so I should probably be somewhere around a 92 by then, but that's not really high enough to increase my chances of acceptance.

My school district offers a voluntary summer school program from mid-July through mid-August. I wouldn't be able to take any core classes (nor would I really need to) or AP's through this, but I could take some light electives which are weighted at the equivalent of non-AP cores. My plan is to get 100's in about four or five light classes, and bump my GPA up to somewhere around a 93.

Would this be worth it? I'd have to forego doing a major summer program this year if I chose to take on the extra schoolwork (I was thinking of doing Brown) but I figured that a summer program really wouldn't help me in the longrun if I didn't have that GPA. Should I just chill out with my 92 and hope my SATs will carry me the rest of the way? (The schools I'm talking about obviously aren't HYP, so I may have some wiggle room.)

I think it’s well worth it. The light classes will definitely increase your GPA.

A question though, I’m not quite familar with the grading scale you’re refering to. Over here we rate on a 0-4.0 unweighted. I’ve seen the scale of up to 100. What does that mean?

You should be in good shape. Which classes do you plan on taking over the summer? If anything, it will only further benefit you as it will show colleges you’re dedicated and took more classes than you had to. (During your own free time!)
