Taking finance classes

I'm interested in taking some finance classes but I've looked at the prereqs and they involve a bunch of econ classes which I am not interested in taking.
Also it says major only so does that mean I cannot take these classes if I am not a social sci major? Because that seems rather unfair when I want to just get a taste of what finance is like.

I am in a similar situation and am currently undecided. I too want to get a feel for the class and what it entails.

Also, I want to minor in Accounting, but I’m not sure how I go about doing that. Any advice is appreciated!

what finance courses are you referring to?

I’ve you’re referring to
Econ 132A INTRO FINANCL INVST
Econ 134A CORPORATE FINANCE
Econ 139 FINANCE ECONOMICS
Econ 142A INDUSTRIAL ORG I
Econ 147A CORP GOVERNANCE
Econ 149 BUSINESS DECISIONS
Econ 161A MONEY & BANKING
and similar courses

then those are economics courses(a fair number of which I intend to take as an econ major interested in finance) and NOT business courses. If you’re not a fan of bayesian economics, you probably won’t like what’s in store. A fair number of those courses expect you to have taken a full stats series(I’m doing Math 131ABC/Stats 120ABC)

if you’re interested in finance and are at merage, just do accounting, there’s a lot of overlap.

all courses at UCI will require pre-reqs… but i think that’s finance in general

there are more under Merage that require less pre-reqs, but it’s difficult to get into MGMT classes if you’re not in the major. if you’re interested in finance you might as well take accounting though. idk. over the summer (and before each quarter if there’s not enough people in the classes) the school restrictions drop too.

and scroll down for the Minor in Accounting [on the general catalog](<a href=“UCI General Catalogue Archives”>UCI General Catalogue Archives)
pre-reqs are Econ 20A, Math 2A, MGMT 30A, & MGMT 30B. you must be either completed with all those classes or currently taking your last pre-req to apply to the minor. make sure your GPA is good enough though, i know someone with a 3.7 and they got waitlisted into the minor… supposedly 3.8 is the avg.

Well right now I’m a math major, planning to switch to engineering, but I would like to dip my toe into finance and see what it is like.

@xelink
I was interested in taking Econ 132A or 161A.
But the thing is that I absolutely hate statistics and econ and would hate to have a bunch of classes devoted to those subjects just for me to be able to take a finance course.

stats can end up being more important in finance than the stuff you will find in upper div math.

Many of the financial models constructed by FE’s require a firm understanding of topics like Stochastic processes, and monte carlo experiments. However an upper div class in PDE’s through the math department is also a good idea

What areas of finance are you most interested in?

I honestly have no idea what area of finance I’m interested in which is one of the reasons I want to take a finance class and explore that area.
And also, what is a FE and PDE?

Financial Engineer - they are charged with creating new “creative” financial trading instruments

PDE - partial differential equation

how far along in the math major are you? Have you taken any upper divs yet?

I’m just an entering freshman and will be taking Math 2D so it won’t be too late for me to change my plans to change my major but I am looking to change it to engineering, not econ.

Engineering can still get you into finance. Just network aggressively and do what you can to establish that you have an interest in finance.

these are the finance related courses you’re eligible for

ECON 135 - MATH OF FINANCE - Math 2AB and (MATH 2J OR MATH 4 )
ECON 139 - SPEC TOP: FIN ECON - Math 2AB

that’s about it. FYI, if you’re a real go getter, Mathematics with a Specialization in Economics + Quantitative Economics + Statistics Minor = GOD MODE when it comes to finance.

PS internships are where you learn what you want, NOT the classes
PSS join the undergraduate finance association. You’ll learn a bit there and there’s good networking + internship opportunities.

I did a google search on him.
Lol, do you think it would a good joke?
Or are you actually being serious…?
