Taking GE Courses at Community College and 4 Year College

Can you take a college course at a community college while attending CSULB? I want to take English 102 at a CC while taking my other courses at CSULB. Is it a requirement to take an English class for your first semester as a freshman? I was planning to take the class at CSULB, but CSULB ran out of room, so now I have a take a critical thinking class that only counts as my GE. If I can take the course in community college, how do I transfer it to CSULB? I'm currently taking a summer class at community to transfers to CSULB in my GE; I was hoping that I could do the same during the fall semester for English.

Freshmen in their first semester can not take more than one foundation course. They didn’t let you take a written communication class because you already have a critical thinking course. You can of course take a class at a CC and have it transfer. Just make sure it does indeed transfer over as a CSU class. I’m not sure of the exact procedure, but you would have to ask your CC to send official transcripts over to CSULB.

What other classes are you taking? In order for you to take that class in the fall, you would have to have dual enrollment. Depending on your schedule, I think you would be looking at a heavy freshmen course load. I guess it all depends on you and what you think you can handle. But honestly, what’s the rush? Ease your way into the transition as a college student.

I was thinking of taking ENGL 102 at a CC instead of PSY 130(the other critical thinking class) because I can’t take COMM 130 until next semester. I can wait until than, but I really don’t want to take a class that would have no effect on me other than GE since PSY 130 doesn’t apply to grad school requirements or minor. I don’t know if I’m minoring in anything, but I’m hoping to minor in Psych and PSY 130 doesn’t count towards the requirements. I’m in a bit of a rush because I fear that I don’t have enough time to squeeze in GE, Major, minor, and pharmacy school requirements within 4-5 years.

I’m taking MATH 122, CHEM 111A, POSC 100, and PSY 130(want to change to ENGL 102 at CC). It’s only 15 units, so it would be possible for me to switch out a class and take it at CC. I have big gaps in certain parts of my schedule, so I could squeeze in ENGL 102 and still have time to study for all of my classes.

I’m almost certain that all the critical thinking classes do NOT count for any part of any actual major. It merely covers the critical thinking requirement that all students have to complete, so it doesn’t matter which area you take that foundation course in. Since you’re thinking about minoring in psychology, I think PSYCH 130 would be a good course to see if you actual have interest in psychology and do want to indeed minor in it.

Congrats on getting into CHEM 111A by the way! It sounds like you’ll be doing a lot in college, but the fact that you are thinking about it now, shows that you are focused and determined.

You’re right, critical thinking does not count as any major, but ENGL 102 does count as the second English class that is required by many pharmacy schools to get in (medical school usually ask for 1 English course). Thanks for your help though. I’ll think about taking PSY 130 if it doesn’t work out. I am interested in the class, I’m just worried about wasting too much time on extra classes…I panic when I don’t know what to expect.

Thanks for the congrats. CHEM 111A sounds hard by the rumor that it has a low passing rate. That’s why I’m thinking of getting some tutoring for that particular class. Do you know where you can sign up for free tutoring for science majors? Do you just come to them, or you have to sign up online?

Now I understand why you want to take ENGL 102. Yeah I definitely think you should try and take it at a CC if it isn’t full already and can fit into the schedule you have at CSULB.

If you’re looking for tutoring, sign up at the Horn Center. Also, did you sign up for a SI class to accompany your chemistry class?

What is SI class? No I didn’t not sign up for one.

Edit: Ok, I just looked up SI schedule, and none of them fit me because other classes overlap during those times. I guess i’ll have to go find a tutor. I do have room for ENGL 102 in CC once I get rid of PSY 130. CC has a lot of afternoon classes, so I can take those if I have to, but I prefer not to.

And I heard about University 100 classes, but they’s not part of the GE, right? Is it a requirement? There are still classes available for NSCI 190A, but their time and place is inconvenient for me since it from the CB to LA5 or FA5. Unless I could find a shuttle to get there, it seems unlikely for me to realistically take that class. I didn’t take the class since it was only 1 unit and it’s so far away from my class.

No UNIV 100 is no longer required. And I’m sorry I don’t understand, you want to take NCSI 190A? Is that required of your major? It doesn’t count for anything unless I’m mistaken.

Well, nvm. I think the NCSI 190A was SUGGESTED by my major because it focuses on teaching out to handle classes as a sci major. I didn’t signup because the class time was too inconvenient for me. Thanks for your help. I just came back from filling out forms to be excused from taking English 100 to take English 110(English 102) at CC. I just hope that I can avoid waitlisted classes again.

Excused from ENGL 100 or from PSYCH 130? Just to be clear, ENGL 100 covers the written communication requirement and ENGL 102 covers the critical thinking requirement. You need both.

I’m excused from ENGL 100 because of AP (got a 4 :D). ENGL 100 is the prerequisite for ENGL 102.

I understand now. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. :)
