Right now I'm a High School senior getting ready to pick classes for college next year. I will probably be majoring in History. I'm really interested in taking German, but since I want to be a lawyer, I know that I pretty much have to take Spanish. Do you think it would work if I take both German & Spanish next year?

Thanks,
Nick

If you are "really interested" in German, take a two semester sequence in your Freshman year. That will give you a foundation you can always build on later. Then take Spanish your Sophomore year or later. Separating the two foreign languages will probably give you a better basis in each of them. However, if you already had Spanish in high school, then continue with it in Freshman year so that you do not lose what you have already gained.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking of doing. Starting out with just German, and then once I hit my sophomore or junior year also start taking Spanish.

a lot of people say that if you really want to be proficient in a language you need to spend 6 months or more immersed in it. So I'd recommend taking one of the languages first and then spending a semester abroad in a country where it is spoken.
