I'm a current student at UCSC, prospective econ major. Long story short, after some poor advisement, I'm taking the Math 11 series here. We have two series of calc: Math 11A/B and Math 19A/B. I intend on applying to UCB, UCLA, UCSD, and UCD as a junior-level transfer, but only UCB accepts the Math 11A/B series as a prereq calc series for economics. At this point, since I'm finishing Math 11B right now, I won't receive credit for taking the 19 series, but because taking the 19 series will satisfy the calculus econ prereq for UCLA, UCD, and UCSD, I'm sure it's worth it to take it; in essence, though I won't receive credit for Math 19 series at UCSC, I will satisfy the calculus prereq for all schools that don't accept Math 11, right?

I'm hoping I can take Math 19A here at UCSC, and the second half of the series at a CC. My local CC, Diablo Valley College, has Math 193, which seems to be the equivalent to Math 19B. Can I take Math 19A at UCSC and Math 193 at DVC to complete the series?

Nevermind, issue resolved!

you know what I hate? When people post they’ve resolved their issues but don’t post how to help out other people that may have the same issue.

So why don’t you ask how I resolved my issue rather than make a snide remark?

I didn’t post my resolution because upon calling UCLA admissions about my issue, the situation changed entirely. I wanted to first make sure that the Math 11 series did not satisfy the calculus requirement for UCLA’s econ department before asking about taking half of the 19 series at UCSC and the other half at a CC. At that point, the admissions rep said she’d have to talk with a transfer admissions counselor to check on the issue and that she’d email me later.

She emailed a couple hours later informing me that I was correct in that the Math 11 series will not satisfy the major requirement for UCLA Econ, but that I didn’t have to take the Math 19 series; rather, she said that the transfer admissions counselor noted taking Math 22 at UCSC would validate the Math 11 series.

There will be very, very few people who find themselves in this particular situation. I intend on majoring in Poli Sci and Econ, so the major I applied to schools as is Poli Sci, since I view that as my “main” major. In fact, I didn’t even think I’d double major until late freshman year, so I had been primarily focused on my poli sci major pre-reqs, and not the econ pre-reqs. As a result, I imagine most students entering UCSC with the intent of transferring as an econ major will do the necessary research, which quite easily leads one to the realization that Math 19 is required for UCLA. Because such a small amount of people are bound to encounter a situation identical to, or even similar to, mine, I figured they’d PM me about the situation, through which I could offer assistance much more extensively.

RamonaFalls, I understand that this is just a forum on the internet, so I sincerely hope you don’t maintain an attitude similar to the one you presented in your comment in real life; I’m not expert on life, nor do I have much life experience being a college student, but an attitude like the one you showed will certainly close a lot of doors for you.

I’ll be fine. Thanks for your concern.
