Taking Japanese...

So I've decided to take Japanese to pass out of the foreign language requirement.

A) The information on registrar.ucla.edu says to sign up for the placement exam at http://www.alc.ucla.edu/japanese starting August 1st, but I don't think it's functioning properly. What do I do?

B) What's the difference between the 1-year foreign language requirement and the 2-year one? Do you recommend starting during the fall quarter to pass out of the requirement, or can I just wait until winter?

C) I don't get how enrollment works. I'm supposed to take the test before the fall quarter starts, and then I enroll the class? What if I can't fit anything into my schedule?

A) Contact the Asian languages department by phone and ask them to help. (310) 206-8235

B) You have to start at the level of whatever class you're placed into.

C) Don't worry. Enroll in a class if it'll let you. If not, just tell the professor why you couldn't enroll. They're used to it.

do you recommend starting fall quarter? or does it not matter?

Start whatever class you place into. If it's J2, then start in winter, and so on and so forth and yada yada.

oh, so different levels start at different times?

does that mean J1 only starts in september?

yes.

fdfadf

Directly from the UCLA Japanese Site

"If you have no experience at all in Japanese and plan to enroll in Japanese 1, you need not take the test."

This seems to contradict most opinions on the subject. Is this a new rule or what?

This is how it has always been. The only reason I even answered your question like I did is because I assumed that you had previous experience with the language.

You don't?

oh dang sorry .. didn't clarify. sorry for any confusion!
