Taking junior year science at Community College, should I still take AP Test?

I dropped AP Chem at my HS since it was too hard for me and my schedule, and instead took General Chemistry at my CC which is supposed to be AP chem level (it's not, it's a lot easier). I got an A and am wondering whether or not I need to take the AP test to prove to colleges that I understand the material well. Also will it look bad that I took my science at a CC instead of HS? Thanks.

The AP exam is designed to indicate whether or not a student has covered the equivalent of a first-year college course by studying that subject in a high school class. You on the other hand have taken a real college class. There is no point in paying for an AP exam. That this course appears to you to be easier than the AP class offered at your high school is immaterial. Taking the class at the CC is fine. It does not “look bad” that you chose that option.

Just remember to keep your grades up. You will need to send the CC transcript when you apply to college elsewhere.

I’m going to disagree on this one. Unless the OP knows they are going to only want to go to their state school, many OOS schools will either not accept the Community college chem or will put it more in the category of an honors class. This is what was told to my daughter by two fairly rigorous and selective schools-Rice University and Duke. At least try for the AP exam and then you will have proof of your competency. If your intended school requires subject tests, you can take the chemistry subject test too. By the way, the AP Chemistry test has been redesigned and the new Baron’s guide has taken these changes into consideration and covers them in the guide.

@saismom thanks for the advice. the chem class that I am currently in doesnt really teach much so i would basically have to self study for the AP exam. if i earn a 5 would it look good to highly selective colleges that i know the material well? how “bad” would a 4 look? thanks.

You can easily determine if the schools will award any credit for those scores by looking at their web sites. Some only give credit for 5’s whereas some will give credit for up to two intro classes of chem for a 4 or 5. It just depends. on that individual school’s policy. Be warned, some schools are no longer giving any credit for AP other than for an elective. Which school are you considering?

@siasmom im not so much as concerned with the credit as how it will appear on my college app? for example if I take the AP test and get a 5 for Chem, will they feel confident that i know the material well. conversely if i get a 4 will they feel as if the chem class i took at CC wasnt rigorous enough? thanks.

? Another thread you dropped AP bio. Wzup? 4 days ago, you were thinking of taking chem in the summer. If all this (and the 2300) is speculative, you should say so.
