I'm an EE freshman and I'm taking 31B now. I DO want to take Math 32A next quarter but the only lecture that fits my schedule has already closed. I heard that Math 33B is kinda easy to handle and it's independent. Could someone tell me whether it will be ok if I take 33B just after 31B, WITHOUT taking 32A? Many thanks!!!

Taking 32A helps, but it’s certainly not necessary. Even if you have absolute no experience with matrix (you use matrix to represent the differential equations, so you can use other techniques, etc.), your professor and TA would refresh your understanding of it in class and discussion.

IMO, it’s not that big of a deal if you haven’t taken Math 32A before 33B. I think my professor asked that exact question in class and 1/4 of the people raised their hands.

Why not 33A instead of 33B? They recommend that 33A for 33B, but… then again, it’s “recommended.”

gotcha. thank you girlyshout!

I heard that 33A is somewhat difficult…but i’m also not sure…

Taking 33A before 32A/B is completely fine. It doesn’t contain any material from multivariable calc. From my experience, 33A is not difficult if you understand the defintions. Since it’s a lower div math class, it’s mostly computational, like, finding eigenvalues.

For 33B, knowing 32A/B materials actually helps a bit… cuz you need to know what partial derivatives are. but still, that’s something you can easily learn by reading wikipedia.

yeah your opinion really helps…thx!!
