I am a rising senior who will be applying to college (and hopefully accepted) in the fall. I know that many colleges allow you to "defer" your enrollment for one year if you have a good reason and/or plan to spend your time effectively. However, I may be in a situation which will require me to take off 2 years between high school and college. This situation is not exactly medical, but is an "inner malaise" of sorts and will require medical treatment and at least one surgery. I will have to take this time off to 1) earn the money for these treatments and for college (my family situation will probably be disastruous during this period, so I'd like to set aside as much money as possible in the event that my parents refuse to pay my first-year tuition), and 2) Get my life together in ways that I'd rather not explain. If permitted to take these 2 years off, I would also give a large amount of my time to a cause like the Peace Corps; this time will not be wasted.

Has anyone here heard of someone who deferred their enrollment for 2 years instead of 1? I've seen some articles about accepted students who opt for a single gap year but nothing about two. Given extenuating circumstances, would this seem to be a viable option at most colleges? (I know that I will have to explain my situation to the admissions office.)
