Hello Everyone,
as the title says, I am currently taking my 2nd year of Spanish. The STEM program I am involved in at my high school only allows for 1 elective every year, and freshmen/sophomore year I chose to take honors/AP social studies classes instead of a language. Will the fact I only have 1 year of language listed on my transcript hurt me for admission to selective colleges?
Thanks in advance!
If the colleges you are applying to recommend or require 3+ years of language and you only have 2 then it could put you at a disadvantage (since many applicants will have all of the required/recommended courses). To minimize the impact, I I would ask your guidance counselor to address the choices you had to make that led to your only having 2 years of foreign language.
At this point you can’t change it, so work hard to put your best foot forward in your applications.
@happy1 all the schools I’m applying to require only 2 years of foreign language, however, most do recommend 3-4. I will definitely talk to my counselor about addressing that fact!
It is good that you meet the minimum requirements for the schools you are applying to. And your application will list the classes you are taking senior year so the second year of foreign language will show up on it. Good luck.
Very few places require a specific number of years of language instruction because they know that there are good students like you whose high school programs simply don’t allow for that many years of instruction. Don’t worry about this too much. Your guidance counselor can address it in their letter if it is not already covered in the school profile that is sent along with your transcript.
