How many people usually do this? Is it a good idea, or is the standard notebook/pen better?

What kind of tablet? I’m not exactly an expert in technology but I’ve heard that a lot of the tablets do not function very well (except ipad, but that’s kind of a different story…)

No one uses tablet PCs although very few use regular laptops. Most people I would say 95% go with pen and paper.

I’m in Steinhardt communications and a LOT of people use laptops. We were required to bring laptops for our Video Game class and for Business of Media. But that’s my department and we’re not indicative of the rest of NYU. For what it’s worth, I borrowed my bf’s iPad for two weeks and I prefer my MacBook for note taking.

ok, this is what I observed.

for my stern classes, most of the people used pen/pencil and paper (paper=notebooks, not to be confused with the notebook computer). At most, 20% of the kids used comps in class.

for my CAS classes, most people used computers, except in one of my classes, when the professor forbade the use of them in class.

for my classes with mixed schools (ie WTE, Nat sci, etc)–mostly pen and paper.

it really depends on the class.

Use of a laptop in a class in calculus or physics would be ridiculous, whereas using one for ConWest is very appropriate.
