Taking One Semester of a Foreign Language

Hi everyone. This isn't related to going to college, per se, but I am looking into taking a beginning French class at the local community college. (I have no prior knowledge of French, but I have studied another Romance language for 4 years.) How much should I expect to learn from a class that is 3 hours a week for half a year?

Thanks

It depends on how much work you put into it afterwards. The key to learning any foreign language is immersion; that’s probably going to be rough for a comparatively brief time at a CC, but you can make up for that in part by reading and doing any assigned homework. You have a decent amount of time; beginning French will almost certainly cover your letters and numbers, basic sentence structure, and likely conjugations (passe compose – past sentence, futur – future tense, and probably imparfait – imperfect and a little bit of conditionnel – conditional). It’s definitely a good foundation if you plan to continue on with French in college (or just show off your basic French skills). You probably won’t be able to read an entire novel in French or anything like that, but you’ll have basic conversational and writing skills and you might be able to read those labels on commercial products that have writing in English, Spanish, and French.
