DD-2014, is finishing up her second year of French - a language that she absolutely loves. She originally intended to take it all four years of HS, but she is having such a difficult time with the instructor. We have had a conference, etc, but it just doesn't seem like continuing with him would be conducive to her enjoyment of the language. He's the only French teacher, and although there have been various complaints about him, he is tenured.

That being said, she is excited about the prospect of taking up French at our local CC next year. I have no experience with this, but I assume that she can take classes there after school, during her junior year.

Will only taking two years of French at her HS, but taking two years of it at the CC, be looked upon favorably (as in meeting most admissions requirements for college), or negatively. I'm not sure what level she would start at (maybe testing into French 2?). UGH! She is in all honors classes and does fairly well, but she is definitely not considering Ivies or extremely competitive Unies. She hopes to major in theater and possibly minor in marine sciences.

Upon graduation, she will have 4 years English, 4 lab sciences, 3 histories and 5 maths. All but one class should be honors or AP. Thanks a lot for your help.

Yes, taking the two French courses at the CC would be looked upon favorably plus the CC credits might transfer to her college depending on where she goes.

It would certainly be looked on favorably, your daughter ought to be aware that there is a good chance that the CC course will move at a faster pace than the high school course.

You stated that she is not interested in going to Ivy Leagues or other really difficult schools, and that she is interested in Theater. I don’t think she needs to take anymore French classes. I took 2 years of Spanish in middle school/high school (I am graduating from high school this year) and I got accepted into several schools.
I am majoring in Architecture next year. I decided not to take Spanish in 10th grade, and to instead take classes related to Architecture. Some of my friends said stuff like “Good luck getting into college now!” but it wasn’t an issue at all. Most colleges require 2 years, or nothing at all.
And, you said she takes honors classes and does well in class. THAT is what colleges care about. Still, call or email a few of the schools she is interested in and ask them what their language requirements are. I don’t think she will have to take French at the community college, though :)
