Taking Over the Max Hours

I'm a college freshman right now and I'm taking the maximum 17 hours that my college allows. I think I'm doing okay (actually pretty well, but its only February, so I guess I have no way to know.) I wanted to know if anyone thinks it would be a big deal to go to 18 for the next three years because I'm hoping to get a BS in Biology and double minor in English and Environmental Studies. Has anyone else gone over their hours before and done well? I want to make sure I won't fail hardcore. LOL. What do you guys think?

This has been covered multiple times on this forum. Do not do this.

It’s fine to do so if you’re willing to spend some more time on homework, and less with friends or whatever else you do. I’m a freshman and I’m actually taking 22 this semester, and will be taking at least that next semester (probably 23-24 next semester, and plan on getting some of my books to start reading over the summer).

If you want to have a Bio major and double minor, I would suspect you’d have to take quite a few credits to graduate in 4 years, depending on how many AP/IB credits you brought into college with you.

If you don’t want to take more than 17, you could consider summer classes or an extra semester if you can afford the $ for either of those options.

You say that 17 is the max allowed and then want to take 18+…do you mean that 17 is the max for freshmen only and that after that you can take 18+?

LOL minor
minors don’t count for anything

Usually, if this is allowed, you also pay a hefty sum to take the extra credits. You may not like the cost financially.

@Piano: I have considered summer classes although I’m not sure how expensive that would be and my family probably does not have the money to pay for them and the university might now accept them; they can be funny that way. All students are only “allowed” to take 17 really, but 18 is only one hour more so I figured it shouldn’t be too terrible. Most people don’t do it, but I know some that have and they seemed to be fine. 17 isn’t just a freshman thing.

@teachandmom: I’m not sure how the payment for an extra hour works as each class is generally 3, so I wouldn’t exactly be taking an extra class I would be taking an extra 1/3 of a class… if that makes sense. I also cannot find anything on my school’s website about how much it would cost, if anything (which I’m sure it does), so thats frustrating.

Thanks for the help guys :)

It doesn’t cost anything extra here. If it doesn’t say anything on the website, it’s likely because there’s no fee. Of course it’s possible that you’re just not finding it, so to be safe you should see a counselor or something.
