Hi, I plan on taking CS61A, Math 53, Econ 1, and Philos 3. I'm taking Philosophy to satisfy a breadth requirement and because I simply like philosophy (or what I imagine philosophy to be). Given that my other 3 classes are rather time-consuming, should I take Philos 3 as P/NP? I'm not a strong writer at all.

I took Phil 3 P/NP. One of my better decisions. The department as a whole grades somewhat harshly. It takes a lot of time and work to get an A, basically. Considering how you are just taking it for breadth, and your 3 other courses are rather difficult, I would suggest you take it P/NP.

However, technically you don’t have to decide until the change grade option deadline which is way late in October I think. Just sign up for it as a letter grade option, and then you can change it to P/NP before the deadline if you choose to. The deadline to change from P/NP to letter grade is before the deadline to change from letter grade to P/NP.

^ah okay thanks. Do you know if that date is after I find out about a significant portion of my grade? (like midterm/paper or something)

Yeah, you should have turned in a paper by then, assuming you have two papers and a final. Though this may vary depending on who’s teaching, and what their syllabus is.
