My D took the Praxis I prior to entering college and passed. She will need to take and pass Praxis II before being eligible to student teach. Is there any down side to taking it this summer. Most students take it fall of their senior year. This will be the summer between her sophomore and junior year. I would expect her to pass but is there a problem if you happen to fail? It appears to me that you control the release of your scores. The benefit of passing would be getting the test out of the way. She also will need to take a second Praxis test for another subject later on. Does getting a high Praxis score matter or is passing the issue?
Any opinions?

Nobody mentioned that my daughter, who will be starting college next fall to study secondary education, should take any exams prior to entering. When do students normally take this test?

lkf- at my daughters school you had to pass Praxis I prior to being admitted to the Education program. I had my D take it the summer prior to entering college. Most of her peers did not take it to soph. year in college.

At her school you must pass the Praxis II subject test before you can student teach.

I’m wondering about the last question too. In NYS we have to take three tests which is like the PRAXIS. Does the numerical score matter in terms of getting hired or do you just need to pass it to get a teaching certificate? I don’t want to spend endless hours studying for them and find out later that I’ve wasted all my time trying to get a really high score for nothing. Will employers ever see the scores?

bump…

I have been told that she should take the test now. There is nothing wrong with attempting it now. Hopefully she will pass and get it out of the way. ( I think she will pass).
The only score that matters is a passing score for the State you want to be licensed in.

So as long as you get your license, the actual test scores don’t really have any bearing on getting a job?

How about grades? I assume that grades matter in finding a job.

I would recommend taking this test as early as possible. The Praxis II for elementary ed was entirely content from high school (history, pre-algebra, basic science concepts, and SAT like reading sections). I know for the math paxis II, the pre-teachers studied at least an entire semester to pass the test.

How many courses in her major has she taken? There are practice tests online on the Praxis site, and there are Praxis preparation books at many book stores and libraries. I would advise her to take a couple of the practice tests first, and if she does well, to go ahead and register for the Praxis II subject exam(s).

Our son is in his second year teaching.
He had a portfolio he brought on interviews that contained in part his Diplomas and state license and his Praxis score report.
At least two interviewers specifically did ask to see his exam scores…so I guess it doesn’t hurt to more than just pass.
