Taking pre-calc freshman year

I just found out today that, although I'm in AP Calculus (AB) right now, I didn't do well enough on my math placement tests to get into Calc I. at Rutgers. I'm not sure if I can email the freshman dean or something and try to work it out, but if I can't, how far back will this set me? I know I can't take any economics or business stat courses until I've passed Calc I.

Anyone else with some similar situations/experiences?
