Taking prereq while taking the class that needs it?

Hi everybody

I was wondering if anyone knows if you can take a prereq for a class while taking the class that needs it.

For example taking 3d design while taking graphic design which needs the prereq 3d design.

Thank you. :)

There is no general answer. It depends on the specific class - ask the professor!

Some classes don’t need their prerequisites at all, sometimes it is sufficient to take the prerequisite concurrently, and in some cases you would get yourself into serious trouble not taking the prerequisite beforehand (think calc 2).

Well I haven’t taken 3D design yet and I’m not taking it this spring semester and I was planning on taking it fall 2010 if it’s not available at the CC over here. The thing is the other foundation classes I have to take for my major have that as a prerequisite so I’m worried that I won’t be able to take the other foundation classes if I don’t take 3D design before then, will I be blocked out of those other art classes or not? Because I need to take all my foundations before a certain time.

It really depends. I suspect that the 3D design class will teach some technical skills (e.g. software) that are assumed in the other classes. You have to find out why it is a prerequisite and then go from there.

Most colleges will let you place out of a class if you can demonstrate that you know the material. If it is a necessary prerequisite for your other classes and not offered for a while, you might want to learn the material on your own.

Well the 3d design class is actually like making things with your hands and it basically teaches about the principles of design and art which I learned about in 2d design, so I feel like I know the material. :x but either way I emailed my advisor asking her about it so hopefully I can. If not I’ll just take it this semester. (I was contemplating taking either computer media or 3d design this spring)

Talk to the actual professor, not your advisor, he will know the real answer. Soemtimes the need for a prereq is a joke and other times it’s essential, so you really need to know exactly why it’s listed as a prereq and the prof is the best person to give you that info.

Ask the prof. If it’s a solid requirement, you’ll be in deep doo doo if you try to sneak in without the prereq. I used to take college. My husband still teaches. We both had students who flunked courses because they tried to take the class simultaneously with the prereq. If they had asked us, we would have told them take the prereq first because they definitely needed to know all of the info in the prereq before taking the more advanced class.
