Searching for some input on applying to Northeastern's Grad. school for Master in Biotechnology (it's under Arts and Sciences as well as Bouve Health). Trying to see the odds of getting accepted. I am attending the University of New Hampshire, what I consider a fairly good college. My current undergrad. GPA is 3.14, but will be above 3.2 by the time I graduate (this spring). I took the GRE today and did poorly on the verbal (430) but good on the quantitative (710). I don't know if they go back to SAT scores (1050) or high school GPA (3.3)? I guess I feel a little intimidated by Northeasten, and was looking for any input from you guys on admissions. Thanks!

Alan, you note in various posts that Northeastern has the top ranked co-op program. Can you prove this? Can you provide a url for the listings of ranked schools?

alan5 is a cool guy......but anyone else think he's either a compensated recruiter working for NU or a faculty member trying to attract more applicants to improve the ranking of the school??

Just take a look at his posts. They are all professionally and well written, include fascinating information about the school regardless of the question; usually he includes links, and he keeps emphasizing on the new residential plans and its co-op program. Sure its a great school and I may even apply there, but I sense something fishy is going on, not that I'm really complaining.

I agree, Alan5 sure seemed like an insider. But even if true, that's OK. He was a willing source of info and it never seemed like propaganda, despite his enthusiasm.

The fact that he disappeared so suddenly makes me wonder though. I miss his contributions, that's for sure.

hi i was wondering how good of a chance i had at getting into northeastern. My GPA is a 3.8 (weighted) ive taken AP bio AP english and AP us History with accelerated algebra 2 and i am currently taking AP chem, AP english and AP spanish with accelerated pre-calculus. I dont test up to par with my GPA so i got a 1070 on my sat's how badly will this affect an acceptance?

This is probably a question for the coach but she didn't answer my email about visiting campus, so...
I do crew and I am wondering how athletics fits in with the coop program. Do most people do sports even for the semester that they're not physically attending classes? Are they eligible for the 5 years that they're at NU or only for the first 4? Thanks.

I was wondering if how helpful NEU is with financial aid? I've heard rumors that when it comes to financial aid, NEU is know for not supplying very much.

Hey! I just sent in my NEU application the other day for Priority/Honors consideration-do you think I have a shot?

Want political science major.... Tell me what you think.

I don't think you will have a problem getting in at all.
Of course Northeastern is becoming more and more selective each go around, but both your weighted and unweighted average are above the mean GPA for students accepted in Fall of 2004 (3.51) and your SAT is just about on par with the middle 50% of students accepted for 2004. They also like to see the well rounded student through EC's which you have.

I'm not certain if Northeastern pits applicants requesting a certain major
(Political Science) against others who are also applying for the same major. If so Political Science is one of the more popular majors in the College of Arts & Science so that may be something to contend with...Again I'm not sure though.

If you have any other questions please let me know if I can help!

These are the U.S. News rankings in response to "Taxguy's" post requesting proof of Northeastern's position as a top co-op school.

"This is the third year that U.S. News is publishing a list of schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success. With the help of education experts, including staff members of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, we identified eight such types of programs. We then invited college presidents, chief academic officers, and deans of students to nominate up to 10 institutions with stellar examples of each program type. Colleges and universities that were mentioned most often are listed here, in alphabetical order."

The schools are listed in alphabetical order.

Iron Maiden- thank you so much. It is good to hear that. I hope I get in because it's my favorite school, but since they can see I applied to BU and BC, they might think I'm usuing it as a safety and reject me. I was thinking about having my guidance counselor write a letter saying that they are y number one school, but otherwise I don't know what to do. I wish they had early action... I would've been all over that.

And also-- I submitted my application in October, and I know they won't send me my letter earlier, but do you think it looks good for me that I sent it in so early? Will I be one of the first applications they see, or are they all mixed up?

I don't think I would consider Northeastern the safty in that equasion. Northeastern is now more selective than Boston University. Plus I would guess that NEU, BC, BU is a typical combination they see. It's a benefit to tell them that Northeastern is your first choice because they are more likley to accept you if they are confident you will enroll, it makes thier yield look better.

Maybe you could write admissions a type of cover letter, or follow-up (since you already sent in your application) that states Northeastern is your FIRST choice for undergraduate study. You don't want to rule out the other schools completely because I think this could affect your financial aid. Once your accepted this is thier bargaining tool to get you to enroll, and if they know your a shoe in, why not give that financial aid to someone who is on the fence about enrolling?

Explain in the "Cover Letter" why you choose Political Science as a major and what you want to do with it, and why you feel Northeasterns "Cooperative approach to learning" would benefit you. You know, kind of like filler, but you also get across the main point that Northeastern is option #1.

Your application is probably not processed yet so that follow-up could be tossed in with your whole packet and viewed at the same time they are reviewing your application. I had the oppertunity to see how thier filing works when I went there; it seems that everything corresponding to your social security number that gets mailed to them gets tossed in this one big folder and stays there until it is time to review the application.

As far as sending in the application early, on the record they say that they review them all at the same time, but someone on another board said that it probably doesn't work like that in reality. It would be like the IRS waiting till everybody filed to start work. I think at certain increments like every other week or something the applications get checked to see if they are "Complete" and if so they are given to an adcom that handles students based on thier last name like "m-p" or something, but this is completly speculitive.

Hope this helps!

Like I said any other questions don't hesitate, I was/am completely obssesive when it came to the whole process, so hopefully I can pass on what I picked up!

Iron Maiden-- thank you so much!! you are so helpful. That cover letter about explaining why I want to go there is a really good idea. I just don't know what to say that wouldn't be repeating all of their catalogue materials. Like... the reason I want to go there is because it's got the co-op program, and I'll get to try out a bunch of jobs before I have to go out there and possibly get a job I don't like. Also because it is in my favorite part of Boston, and has a campus. I mean, those really are the reasons I want to go, but they are the same reasons everyone else wants to go lol. I need something creative. hmmmm lol. any ideas?

Ironmaiden, I agree that Northeastern has a top rated co-op program. However, Alan5 noted it had "the" top rated co-op program in one of his posts. The URL that you cited confirmed that Alan5 was exaggerating a bit.

I do remember a banner hanging up at Northeastern when I went to visit it that said "Number One X consecutive years" (I forget howmany exactly but I believe that for 2002 the rankings were:

Northeastern

Drexel University

Berea College

University of Cincinnati

Again thats via USN. As for 2004 and 2005 I know they were top 10 but am not certain if they were ranked number one, I will try to find the specific rankings. I Believe that banner said "3 years running" so I believe the were number one in 2004 as well, but I will see if I can find some definite rankings.
