Taking questions

First of all, I'm not a CMU student, however I have been on CMU's campus several times so I can answer questions relating to things like the atmosphere, campus, etc.

How would you describe the atmosphere?

Hmm, actually now that you ask it I don't know how well I can answer. In my opinion the atmosphere just walking around has seemed good and the people seem nice. I don't think it's a bad atmosphere, but i don't know anything but competitiveness. I realized that I just haven't had enough contact with students to really answer this, sorry.

how many squash courts are there?

i'm not a CMU student either, but i frequent the campus as well. overall, i'd say it's a pretty comfortable atmosphere. CMU kids get a rep for being the stereotypical nerds that just sit in their rooms and read all day, but really, the general vibe from the campus doesn't seem so much like that at all. i remember going down there once and being recruited to sign petitions for gay rights per a booth set up in the quad-- something you usually might not expect out of CMU.

the art school has a really great feel to it-- aside from the architecture, there's usually always someone practicing an instrument close enough to the entrance that you walk into a free little concert at any given time.

the fact that it's in the quieter part of oakland helps too; it's still full of energy, but not necessarily the honking cars and cacaphony associated with the pitt campus. not to knock pitt-- i think you're just able to escape the fact that the school's in a city a bit more with CMU.

Right now there are 4 racquetball courts in the UC (Univ Center) 2 of which can be either squash or racquetball courts.

CMU just named a new athletic director. They plan on building a new athletic field house in the near future to replace old Skibo Gym, which I think is something they really need.

have you visited RIT? are they nerdier?

i've not visited RIT, but keep in mind that CMU has a really great art school and is very much involved with the pittsburgh arts scene (with the museums, mellon jazz, etc), so there's a fair share of artsy people to counteract the "nerds". from my experience, the CMU kids arent necessarily as "quirky" as say, the MIT nerds or the Uchicago kids... but they're not nearly as lock-up-in-the-room-and-read-a-textbook as so many people make them out to be.

Yes - it's definitely a melange of students. Alot of people sitting on the lawns reading, people playing tennis, students playing frisbee on the "cut." You have a real mix of students when you take in to account that Carnegie houses some of the top engineering/comp sci programs in the country in addition to the nation's top drama school

how good is the CMU's male a capella group?
