Taking SAT in sophomore or junior year?

My daughter is thinking about taking the SAT in her sophomore year and again in junior year. I was wondering, as some colleges look at all SAT scores, how does it reflect in her college application if there is a large gap between the two scores?

Any comments are appreciated.

Why does she want to take it sophomore year?

She’s already taken Geometry, Algebra, and Algebra II. Also, she has been scoring well on practice tests (2200).

Ok that makes sense. I guess most colleges take the highest score so I don’t see there is a problem. But I rather my daughter prep and take it one time unless she has to repeat. I mean I don’t see the advantage of taking it in Sophomore year if you know she is capable of higher score in Junior year.

If she thinks she’s ready, and is happy with expected scores (be careful though, practice tests aren’t necessarily the exact score she’ll get) why not?

I took it my sophomore year, and am extremely happy with the results. I kind of rushed into it, based only off of PSAT scores, but end result was great.

I may take it one more time, but there is a huge load of pressure I’ll never have to experience. I didn’t spend hours prepping, I don’t ‘need’ to take it one more time to get into college XYZ. And even if I did, I still have more time to prepare than those who take it junior year and find out they have one summer to improve their scores.

Also, from what I’ve read on these message boards, 3 times seems pretty normal, so she could still take it once junior and senior year. Also, many colleges accept score choice or look at only top scores.

So, basically, if she expects a score good enough for her goals, why not? My scores met my goals, and it took away a whole lot of stress.

Also, don’t forget about subject tests.

I took it sophomore year as a test just to see what it was like

The gap is no problem, especially if your daughter does better on the second one.

Taking it more than once is good because the first time around, she might be too nervous to get a good score. 2 times is a good number of times to take the SAT I.

So yes, your daughter should take it soon, even if just for practice.

2200 looks good though, expected of anyone active on these forums… CC helped me get into college

Thanks for all the input so far. I think she is leaning towards taking the SAT in October.
