My question is, if I took a subject test in June, didn't like my score, and wanted to re-take that test in October, would colleges simply take the better score or would they look at the first one as well?

They usually only look at the better score.

They SAY they only look at your best scores. However, they obviously look at ALL scores (though with what weight is unknown). If they didn't look at lower scores, score choice would be completely redundant.

But is it any different than the policy for the reasoning test?

Same, as far as i know.
