I know many schools, including NYU CAS, do NOT allow students to take courses off-campus for credit and they expect students to complete all their courses, including summer school, at NYU.

Are many or most other schools like this? Are other schools more lenient?

I've never personally encounted a school like that. Most prefer that you take the class with them, but there isn't a rule saying you can't take it elsewhere.

I've heard about schools that won't accept summer credits for certain programs, but they also don't care where you take it.

It really sucks that your school is like that!

My college allows it but limits it to 2 units (8 credits).

NYU is very explicit about not accepting transfer credit from summer school elsewhere:
[quote]
SUMMER SESSION

Once admitted to the College, students take all courses here, including those they need or wish to take during the summer. Exceptions are granted only rarely and only for good academic reasons. Requests should be made to an adviser in the College Advising Center,Silver Center, Room 905.

I would recommend you talk to the Advising Center, but I am afraid that there is not a lot that they can do given that NYU has very strict policies on that matter.

I'm talking to the Dean tomorrow who apparently can make exceptions. He's the one who wrote me the letter denying my request.

I could take classes at NYU this summer, but I'd have to really, REALLY want to ($10,0000 + for just two courses for tuition and housing). No financial aid is offered for the summer.
UCLA would honestly be 1/4 the cost, and I wouldn't need housing because I have family there.
