Taking the ACT more than 3 times?

Is it bad to take the ACT more than three times?

I took it three times and got the same score all three times.

28C: 24E, 27M, 28S, 33R 9W

28C: 27E, 27M, 28S, 30R, N/A W

28C: 26E, 27M, 30S, 27R, 10W

Personally, I would not take it more than three times because it does give a bad impression. I am not saying that you won’t get into a good Ivy league school such as Stanford or something if you took it the forth time and got a 35 or 36. But in general sometimes that fourth time getting a high 30 isn’t worth that much. If you are planning on taking one more time I suggest you study very hard and plan on getting a score of 34, 35 or 36, if not do not take it.

what is the stigma though with taking it more than three times?

I don’t think it would be ‘bad’ to, but if you take it a 4th time, you’re more likely not to see any improvement.

@GoldenMonkey I don’t see how it would give a bad impression at all unless your applying Ivy League. The majority of colleges don’t see all your ACT scores; you only show them which ones you want them to see. Therefore, taking the ACT a fourth time in your case would not be a bad idea at all unless your applying Ivy. I raised my score 4 points from the third to fourth try.

I would not take it if my scores were the same 3 times in a row.

My College Advisor and Planner has told me that if you take it more than three times then colleges can see all your scores and many colleges average them.

Take it again. Make sure you’re well prepared and scoring in the 30s on all your practice tests. If you’re going to take the ACT one last time you might as well give it all you’ve got.

Contrary to a very few number of people on here, taking the test many times will not improve your score; it never has. The only significant improvement is from the first to the second, or if you took those in 9th and 10th grade, or you made some amazing improvement between now and then.

It doesn’t hurt to take it again unless you are applying to a top school that requires you to send all scores. As long as your testing isnt interfering with you building your EC accomplishments, then try again.

My DD took it four times during junior year and raised one point each time.

Good luck!
